History and Cultural Background
“Shoumei is a classic variety of white tea originating from Fujian Province, China, and a key representative of Fuding white tea. Its name, meaning ‘Longevity Eyebrow,’ derives from its leaf shape resembling long, graceful eyebrows and symbolizes longevity and well-being. With its natural production process and unique aging value, Shoumei is cherished as ‘drinkable antiques.’”
Origin and Growing Conditions
“Shoumei is primarily produced in Fuding and Zhenghe regions of Fujian Province, areas known for lush mountains, humid climates, and misty environments. Made from the leaves and tender shoots of large-leaf tea plants such as Da Bai or Shui Xian varieties, Shoumei’s exceptional growing conditions impart a rich, natural flavor.”
Unique Craftsmanship
“Shoumei is crafted using traditional white tea methods, including natural withering and low-temperature drying. Without rolling or fermentation, the tea retains its natural form and active compounds. Over time, Shoumei ages gracefully, with its aroma and flavor deepening and becoming more robust.”
Flavor and Characteristics
“Shoumei is loved for its warm, complex flavors:
- Appearance: Large leaves resembling eyebrows, with green or grayish hues and silvery hairs.
- Tea Liquor: Light yellow and clear when fresh, transitioning to amber with aging.
- Aroma: Herbal, floral, and fruity notes, often with hints of jujube as it ages.
- Taste: Sweet and refreshing with a smooth texture; aged Shoumei is richer, mellower, and offers a long-lasting aftertaste.” The multi-layered flavors of Shoumei provide a delightful experience for tea enthusiasts, regardless of its vintage.
Health Benefits
“Shoumei’s natural processing and nutritional profile deliver significant health benefits:
- Rich in polyphenols, offering antioxidant properties and detoxification.
- Aids digestion and boosts immunity.
- Aged Shoumei is especially gentle, making it suitable for year-round consumption, particularly beneficial for digestive health. Shoumei combines health value with exquisite flavor, making it a white tea of choice.”
Culture and Ritual
“Shoumei embodies the elegance and natural beauty of Chinese tea culture. Drinking Shoumei is not just about savoring tea but experiencing the art of time. Its characteristic of ‘improving with age’ makes every cup a journey through the essence of time.”
Brewing Instructions
“To brew Shoumei:
1. Use 5-8 grams of tea leaves per brew.
2. Heat water to around 90°C (194°F).
3. Gently pour hot water into a gaiwan or Yixing clay teapot, steep for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
4. Adjust steeping time based on its vintage—aged Shoumei can benefit from longer steeping to release its rich flavors. Shoumei is suitable for multiple infusions, with each steep revealing different aromas and flavors.”
